Treasure Hunt with Grandkids

Getting Kiel Excited over Treasure Hunt

Kiel, our grandson is in his first year at kindergarten and he knows how to read and write now. A week ago, Shane and I wrote him an invitation letter to a treasure hunt at our house. Our plan was getting Kiel excited over treasure hunt and looking forward to fun activities during his school holiday. Mommy helped him read some of the words in the letter and he checked on all the things he needs to bring for a stayover at grandpa’s and grandma’s house.

Treasure Hunt Day

Mommy drops boys here early for their Treasure Hunt Day. Kiel is all charged up and excited. He brings along the map I had drawn for him. He wants to start right away but first grandpa must bring both grandkids into the bedroom because grandma needs to hide all the treasures! Amazing how quickly and willingly both boys run into the room! Aaron just follows whatever big brother Kiel does, so he gets excited too. While grandpa entertains the grandkids, I start hiding all the toys I’ve marked earlier on another map.

Let’s Start

All set, let’s start the hunt! Kiel is equipped with my handphone on loud speaker. Grandpa sits by the window giving instructions via his phone. I have numbered all the hidden spots on the map. He begins to understand how to look for each item after getting through the first two. Clues like ‘a crawly is up on a tree. Look for it’ and for Aaron, ‘there is something orange inside one of grandma’s flower pots’. I give both boys sufficient time to look for each item themselves before giving a new hint. They are so excited since the map brings them outside to grandpa’s truck, the garden, sun room and inside the house. The best part is some of the toys were handpicked by them two weeks ago when we went to the Dollar Tree store.

Fun with All the Treasures

Boys takes over an hour hunting for treasures and then assemble them on the table. Now the fun begin with all the treasures for each one of them. They play for another hour before Aaron takes his afternoon nap. Afterwards, grandpa set up the water sprinkle and boys play with a big sized watermelon ball and water guns. Today has been a great fun day for our grandkids and both go to sleep early without complaints. Treasure hunt is a great way to teach our older grandson listening skill and being patient with his little brother. Since Kiel knows which toys are his, it is easier to instill sharing behavior and kindness.
