Humanitarian Work
Some of you may be aware of our humanitarian work in Malaysia to help the poor, homeless and refugees. Shane conducts workshops and free counseling through his Choices Counseling Services in Malaysia and the United States. For the past 15 years he buys heavy blankets in yard sales and at Goodwill throughout the year. He distributes the blankets to the homeless people in Spokane during our winter months. Humanitarian work has been instilled in him since young following his parents footsteps.
Face Masks for the Homeless
Shane has distributed over 7000 face masks for the homeless community in Spokane since September 2020. The masks came from his volunteer work at the United States Census Bureau. He was the team lead and helped closed down the office at the end of the census. The director of the US Census in Eastern Washington donated some leftover boxes of masks when he found out about Shane’s humanitarian work. We were rather skeptical at first if the homeless people will use these face masks. It was a great feeling to see many sporting the white face masks on their faces when we made our second round around the downtown area.
Food and Blankets for the Homeless
We began offering fresh fruits and salads last September as well. These were donations from various sources. Towards November when the temperature dropped, Shane and I started offering food and blankets for the homeless. We make Shredded Chicken Teriyaki Sandwiches wrapped in cling wrap to reduce garbage waste. We wanted to offer a different food for a change and it was received well. Shane purchased Emergency Survival Blankets (Mylar blankets) when all the heavy blankets have been given away. Our Summit Church bible study group found out about it and donated another 250 pieces. They also gave us some cash donation which we topped up and purchased another 500 pieces. We want to thank our family and friends for supporting our humanitarian work.
