Don Don Donki Sunway Pyramid Grand Opening
A food blogger posted that Don Don Donki has a grand opening at Sunway Pyramid, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya. One of the highlights is the real Japanese wasabi served in their restaurant. Shane has mentioned for days about looking for fresh authentic wasabi in Malaysia. Most restaurants and stores sell wasabi made using European horseradish as its main ingredient. He wants to look for the Japanese wasabi. The real deal. We were so eager to get the real taste, we took a Grab Car and ran smack into the 4th day of Don Don Donki grand opening!
Huge Crowd
Both of us are not a fan of huge crowd and it became pretty daunting trying to navigate our way into the store. What is Don Don Donki? We remember this place as a “donkey” but this is actually Don Quijote Co., Ltd., a Japanese multinational discount store chain. It has over 160 locations throughout Japan, 15 in Singapore, 9 in Hong Kong, 6 in Thailand, 3 in Hawaii and Malaysia, 2 in Taiwan, and 1 in Macau and Guam. This is the place to shop if you are a fan of Japanese food. On this day, the crowd is HUGE and everyone is piling their shopping baskets to the brim! The queue to the cashiers is long. Our mission – to find the real wasabi.
New Outlet Staffs
We don’t want to sound critical but after asking at least 5 staffs for wasabi, we found one who directed us to a shelf filled with tubes of them. The new outlet staffs couldn’t tell us where we can buy fresh wasabi as advertised. Those tubes were the fake ones. Another staff directed us to a “restaurant after the cashier”, he said. We looked around twice before we found an entrance to their Japanese restaurant. It was either poor signage or we were blind! The restaurant manager promised they served the real wasabi when we dine here.
Sen Sen Sushi
Sen Sen Sushi is supposedly an authentic setting Japanese restaurant serving varieties of Japanese sushi and sashimi. It advertises freshly milled Japanese Koshihikari rice for sushi. We ordered just a few, having just had lunch before we came. All we wanted was a taste of the real Japanese wasabi. The restaurant manager gave us a couple of wasabi sachets. We have been spoilt by having the opportunities to dine in some really nice Japanese restaurants. The sushi chefs in this restaurant look like assembly workers, adding pre-sliced sashimi to pre-formed rice. The video below shows it all. And NOPE….the real wasabi isn’t 100% Japanese wasabi. The first ingredient is horseradish.
Our Outlet and Restaurant Reviews
Our one time visit to the outlet shows us Don Don Donki has a superb collection of food and snacks. The sashimi section is great. We are going to buy some sushi seasoning back to the US with us. The restaurant is a major let down. In our humble opinions, we might as well eat in one of the other fast food Japanese restaurants available all over Sunway Pyramid Mall. We will go for the ones at AEON food court if we have to dine here. See it for yourself.
